The deterioration of Algeria’s solid external liquidity position is accelerating on the back of steadily falling oil & gas prices. Therefore, Algeria has imposed some import restrictions with the aim to improve its external position and the country is likely to continue doing so. Given its still ample foreign exchange reserves and the imposition of import restrictions rather than transfer restrictions, a downgrade to category 3 is deemed sufficient for the time being.
